Volunteers Pull Together

Volunteers from Kilsyth Academy are helping to pull together a Woodland Management Plan for the Kilsyth Woodland Centre. Following a tree survey by the North Lanarkshire Arboriculture Team, trees that were diseased have been identified and felled, providing us with lots of stumps, pennies, branches, rods, seeds etc for use in our Outdoor Learning and Play programme. Details of the survey are detailed below.

Basic Tree Survey: Site – Kilsyth Primary School

Introduction

The tree survey covers a 0.26 woodland site directly to the east of Kilsyth Primary School. A tree survey was commissioned as it is intended that the site will be used for an outdoor classroom/forest school site.

The site consists of landscaped planted trees, with the lime trees in the northern tip of the site planted approximately 60 years ago. The site also contains more recently planted trees and shrubs as well as natural regeneration. The site contains a number of mature trees and variety of species. In addition, there is a thick understory of shrubs present in some areas of the site. The site is dissected by a footpath which leads from Low Craigends road to Kilsyth Primary School. The northern section contains predominantly Lime, Sycamore and Hawthorn trees. The southern section is dominated by self seeding Willow. Only Individuals trees with a DBH (diameter breast height) with a DBH > 20cm were surveyed. Immature trees worth retention and groups of trees of the same species were also tagged. Shrubs were not tagged. Recommendations were made dependent on the condition of trees. Willow trees within the southern section of the site were tagged as group.

Recommendations

As the site is to be used as an outdoor classroom particular attention was paid to the larger trees within the survey area.

Within the northern section Lime trees T49 & T53 have rot near the base and it is recommended that they are felled within 3 months. The Sycamore T52 also requires felling within 3 months. A number of trees require some minor works and thinning as well.

It is highly recommended that some shrub clearance is undertaken prior to tree works. In addition the level of thinning should be agreed upon. The site is to be used as an outdoor learning area and it would not be beneficial to clear the majority of undergrowth.

A tree survey should be carried out every 3 years to check the condition and safety of the trees, in particular the mature trees. Also, it is recommended the school undertake a visual check of all trees after high winds. A suitably qualified arborist should check any damage to trees or any issues which arise as a result of high winds.
